Small Flat Bowl with Glazed Target

Your eyes will tell you this piece is soft knitting but your touch will tell you it’s ceramic. And they both will be right, because clay doesn’t get knitted, and knitting isn’t hard. But here it is: a sweet little bowl with a hand-painted glazed target on the inside bottom. How? It starts with handknit cotton which is dipped in liquid porcelain, shaped as it dries and fired to temperature. The cotton burns away, leaving a detailed memory of the knitting. It is light, yet it is strong because porcelain is quite dense. The glazed target design is added to the completed work and the piece is fired for a third time. What remains is the amazement.
