Peapod Bag with Lime Green Rim

Your eyes will tell you this piece is soft knitting but your touch will tell you it’s ceramic. And they both will be right, because clay doesn’t get knitted and knitting isn’t usually hard or glazed! But here it is: a lovely, intricately knit low porcelain bag, shaped into a double opening with a lime green glazed rim. What’s going on? It starts with a handknit cotton shape which is dipped in liquid porcelain, sewn and shaped and then fired to temperature. The cotton burns away, leaving a detailed memory of the knitting. It is light, showing all the handknit details. It is strong because porcelain, contrary to its appearance, is quite tough. The lime green touches were added with a third firing.
