Long Bag with Black Rim and Rose

Your eyes will tell you this piece is soft knitting but your touch will tell you it’s ceramic. And they both will be right, because clay doesn’t get knitted and knitting isn’t usually hard, or glazed! But here it is: a lovely intricately knit and shaped porcelain low bag with a black-glazed rim and a red appliquéd rose. What’s going on? It starts with a handknit cotton shape which is dipped in liquid porcelain, stitched and shaped and then fired to temperature. The cotton burns away, leaving a detailed memory of the knitting. It is light, showing all the handknit details. It is strong because porcelain, contrary to its appearance, is quite tough. The colors are applied and there is a third firing.
