The history of tall narrow sculptural forms is ancient and full of meaning. In the natural world, a tree, a pinnacle, a column of fire and smoke attained significance as an axis mundi, a world pillar, connecting heaven and earth. All manner of human-made objects can express this connection: towers, staircases, rockets, searchlights. And sculptures. In my artistic world, I find myself creating totems, obelisks and a variant form, the backyard incinerator. All are handformed and decorated and range from tabletop heights to, well, as tall as I can reach.
